Upon arrival in a new town in New Leaf, everyone is excited for the new "Mayor."
- "You're different from everyone else... That's good! We need NEW ideas." One villager told me.
- It was also stated by Isabelle that Tortimer was the "mayor" for many many years, a telltale sign of an oppressive dictator.
- All other villagers were hopeful that my character can make the town "amazing." Amazing as in "before the dictator took over."
- Isabelle also oddly mentions restrictions on your power, the specified reason was to avoid (ANOTHER) dictatorship.
- To improve your approval rating, you can:
- change the flag (of the old regime)
- plant flowers (destroyed by the old regime)
- talk to village folk (imprisoned by the old regime) etc etc.
It is my theory that Tortimer was elected mayor, and subsequently sparked a nuclear holocaust, killing most flowers, town folk and poisoning the food supply, which is why villagers like to fish. The fruit is all plastic (for show) seeing as all real fruit was contaminated in the blast.
100 years after said nuclear event, Tortimer grew feeble and show moved to his island paradise, in which he once occupied to avoid the nukes. His younger ? albeit old as hell ? brother Raul was coming in via train to take control of the dictatorship, but had a change of heart once his train unexpectedly exploded. This is how you become mayor.
