As someone who bought multiple 3DS consoles and copies of games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pokémon games for the purposes of trading and other conveniences, I can definitely see the appeal of doing so. However, the price point difference between the 3DS and the Switch and the higher cost of Switch games has made it a hard no for me (plus I didn't really enjoy Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield, so there's been less incentive). I think I'd probably want to upgrade though if any of those rumors of a Switch Pro ever actually develop into anything, which isn't really out of the realm of possibility when you look at how many different iterations Nintendo handhelds have had. Until such a time as such an upgraded system might release, I can't justify it to myself, and I'd refrain from advising others to do so because it might end up a situation where you regret not waiting. But hey, if you really feel strongly about getting one and you are comfortably able to afford it, you do you.

i'm corny but i think there is something cathartic about working really hard on something intangible like an animal crossing island and then letting it go. i reset my island after "finishing" (getting all the DIYs, making it all nice) and started fresh. the 500 hours i put into that island gave me a lot of joy, but i no longer felt the urge to play it, and wanted to re-experience it. i get anxious if i'm too precious about my ac island. it was the time spent that was fun, not the finished product.

if you can afford a second switch and feel that there is value in preserving your first island, go for it. i like animal crossings replay value. i'm going slower on DIYs and other things in my second run and i feel less keyed up about getting everything done. how you play the game is up to you!
Yeah I will admit I kinda time traveled too much on my first island and I wanted to get most of the DIYS. I think that was because of the pandemic that really made me spend so much time playing the game that I wanted to complete it as soon as I possible, but over time it really started to wear down on me because I kinda felt silly for rushing through so much. I did learn that taking your time is the most important thing in a game.

For a while since this year started I have cut down on time travel and it has really helped me not worry so much on trying to complete my island so much. Maybe my playstyle is different from most people, since I tend to be someone who wants to get things done quickly so it doesn't get in the way of other stuff that I do in my own personal life. I think I just need to slow down a bit and not rush through so much.

So for my 2nd island I am going to go in without time traveling and without stressing so much about the whole terraforming since over time it became more of a chore than having fun and enjoying yourself.

I don’t have a second island but I just wanted to post what I think about it. I just don’t really think the money is worth it to get a second island. It seems like you have finished your current town. If you do end up getting a second switch and create a new island, do you think you might still play in your current island? I feel like I wouldn’t. Terraforming and all the new tasks will be top priority and I feel like most time will be spent on the new island. So essentially the old island is still there just less played and somewhat abandoned.
Also I feel like if I were to create a new island, a lot of the aesthetics would be the same. That might not be the case for you though. I used to have two towns in previous games ( new leaf ). That’s what ended up happening.

If what you want is the sentiment or memory of the current island, dream address are kept even if you reset. So even if you were to reset the game, you can dream of your old island, and visit often.

Well I appreciate your input but again I said it multiple times but I am not going to restart. The reason why is because I had this island since day one and if I were to through all that way just to make room for a new island, it just won't feel right in my personal opinion.

2nd Island for me is different because I would have to see how I can make it stand out differently compared to my other island. Besides I am not too stressed about managing 2 islands at once since my main one is complete and if I want to feel more refreshed to the game the 2nd island is beneficial to me. Of course I still have to wait and see what happens going forward.

I wouldn't bother, it sounds to me like you've gotten everything out of the game that you ever possibly could already.
That maybe so, but I just want to go with an island that feels a lot more different compared to when I had my first island. You see back then in March 2020 when the game first came out I didn't know what to do with my island and since then I gained enough skill and knowledge to know what to do in the game.

So a 2nd island for me is like the thing I want to have. Sure I know what to expect in the game since I've played it before, but at the same time I will approach it differently. On my main island I used to do a lot of terraforming, did a lot of trading with others, and of course really did a lot of time travel. Of course that was then, but now I want to have a slow pace on the 2nd island where I don't feel too pressured to do stuff so quickly.

I guess that was my own fault because I allowed it to happened, I know last year was the pandemic and we spent so much time in doors and this game was the only thing I had that was keeping me invested. Now about a year later I don't feel as invested as I before. I am still holding off on getting a 2nd switch because like I mentioned I am not sure what Nintendo is going to do with the whole "one island per switch issue" maybe if they release the feature to add another island one switch maybe that will save me time and money from buying it

If it doesn't come then I will just have to bite the bullet and buy the 2nd switch at a decent price.

I'm going to when the switch pro comes out.
I'll probably transfer my current island to it, and finally get around to modding my current switch, it's one of the original ones.

I started a second island as a cycle island for villagers for my shop, so that I didnt have to keep starting over friendship levels with one of my permanent villagers, and also to have a catalog island. I've only had a couple of villager orders since then and I haven't moved my stuff over to it. You can see how well my catalog island is going. 🙄 I do have a bunch of Sanrio villagers and other ones that I do t have room for on my main island, so there's that, but unless I get my catalog island together soon, it will have been a complete waste, because I'm NOT going to fully decorate a second island.

Not to mention, if you want to visit yourself and have both of your characters be able to play at the same time, you'll need a second copy of the game and you'll been to play locally if you use the same online account. I use my husband's copy of the game, so I didnt buy a 3rd copy. I also already had a second switch that I had just never opened that I got as a gift after I'd already bought one, but yeah. I do think I'll switch hemispheres on that one though, that'd be nice.

I have a second switch and its been great, my second island has become my main and i couldnt be more happy with it.
it seems like you really want a second island, i say go for it, wait till the price is right and snag one!

Well I don't have a physical copy of the game, but a digital copy. Someone told me that if you have a digital copy of the game you can use it on the 2nd switch with the same account.

I've seen people save an island to a dream address, then restart so that they can experience having multiple islands. Personally though, if this is all your spending money, I would say it's not worth it. That's a lot of money.

Oh ok, I'm not sure, I've never used a digital copy, but I imagine you could use it for both! I wonder if you would be able to use both at the same time though. 🤔

Thats something I want to know myself. I haven't seen a video on YouTube on how it works so I want to get an idea of what to expect if I do decide to buy the 2nd switch.

If I remember correctly you need 2 accounts but only 1 needs to own the game.
On the switch being the main switch of the person who owns the game, you can play at the same time, just not on the primary account. You need to make a second user.

On the second switch which is not the main switch for the account that owns the game, you play game on the account that owns the game.

You can then play the same game at the same time on both.
However if you try to make them interact, they will error you.
Also you need to be online for it to check you can play. No WiFi no game.

I know that made no sense but yeah.

My guess would be that you could use it for both, but not simultaneously, since it would be the same account. I hope you're able to find out though!

i think there's absolutely no point in doing that personally... it sounds like a huge waste of money to me, cause if you were to start a new island you'd probably not play on your old one anyway... so you could just save you the almost $400 and reset your island. I know you don't want to hear it but that's just the logical thing to do in my personal opinion 0.0

the other thing i would suggest, since you aren't willing to reset, is to wait for the new switch pro or whatever it's called! if you play other games and you can afford to buy a new console this is the much better option cause this way you'll get more use out of it and not just buy it for a second AC island ^^

of course these are just opinions based on my experience, financially and gaming wise. if you can afford it without hurting your wallet too much it might not be a big deal for you as it is in my head and you might actually really enjoy having a second island like that! So i'm just sharing my thoughts and it's all up to you and how you feel  hope you make the decision that will work for you in the end!~

Once again I am not going to restart my island and I know that the Switch costs a lot of money. Which is why I am holding off until I see a decent price or if and only if Nintendo decides to add a feature to let you make an island on one switch. I am going to see what happens, before I make my final decesion.

that's why i suggested waiting for a new switch so at least you can get some more use out of it with new games and features and not worry if it's going to be a waste so much ^^

I did it for New Leaf, it was more convenient for trading as I didn't speak English at all few years ago and really wanted an horror town... I finally never made. So think carefully first.
I understand perfectly the idea of having several towns you can decorate as you wish and do multiple themes accordingly... I wanted to do the same even before the game was released but I changed my mind because even if ACNH is not bad and I enjoy it, it's not enough for me to spend more money on it as many features are still missing and I've lost the more important: dialogues with villagers. So for now it's a big no for me.
But if you want to, don't hesitate! But it's maybe a bit sad to spend that much money for just a game?
