I'm planning on making my main room a sort of cozy libary, in my back room the Princess Series/a sort of candy/bakery store, in my left room Regal series with instruments, right room Rococo and my second floor a throne room. I'm making an exhibit in the museum for my Mermaid series/rare fish, Nintendo Items, Bug and Insect furniture. Oh and my basement will be a surveillance center with the sci-fi theme.

I find the Mermaid/Rococo series really pretty, because it's a series we haven't seen before. I hate the balloon series and will almost leave the room immediately when I see them (THE BRIGHTNESS, MY EYES, MY EYES!!) , altough the dog lamp is kind of cute....

Yeah, this post is exactly what I came in here to say!

Some of my friends use furniture sets (mermaid included) that I definitely wouldn't use in my house, but that's the beauty of this game I think. Different people like different things, whether it's the furniture they collect, the villagers they want, the way they decorate their town, the clothes they put on their mayor, and whatnot.

It's okay if you don't like a particular furniture set, or if you get tired of seeing it. But I think everyone should probably be careful about calling things boring, or cookie-cutter, or uncreative, etc. That's pretty rude.

Just because it's not to your taste doesn't mean it's bad. :P Let people decorate however they want. They spent the same amount of money on the game that you did, and I think it's a little early to start getting elitist about how other people decorate!

I've stressed that I don't find these rooms bad. I've said before that I understand the appeal considering I've had the same exact rooms myself. But I decided against it, when I saw how everyone had very similar interiors. I'm just asking why these types of rooms are still so popular?

I totally get that everyone can design whatever and however they want, who cares it's a video game that's completely about that. But this is a forum about a video game, I didn't think it would hurt to ask. I think that it's fair to say, that at least Nintendo rooms are common, according to everything I've seen in my HHA showcase which only has two open spots left. Except for 4 houses, everyone has a Nintendo room. Again I'm not trying to ostracize people with these rooms, I'm just curious on how they're everywhere.

I will say that it looks like most people time travel or trade in my HHA showcase, considering how they'll be plenty furnished. So I'm looking at the question from that standpoint. People who do trade and TT can get a variety of rooms because they have bigger catalogs, but they go for the Nintendo room anyway? Besides the 4 houses in my HHA showcase without a Nintendo room? Their houses really imply that they just started the game. We're looking at common floors, common walls, and a lantern.

Bolded the bit I want to comment on- I think what you said here is particularly relevant. When it comes to interiors, the game actually rewards you for not being imaginative. That might explain the ubiquity of some room designs. A lot of people care about HH scores. One house in my HH showcase had really high HH scores, and it was basically just mermaid room, Pave room, egg room, modern wood room, and lovely room, with almost no evidence of a unique personality anywhere. I thought it was ghastly, but evidently this is what Lyle goes for. :P

Man, Lyle must be ecstatic when he sees the same series he sees over and over again in different houses. He really does push against individuality.

I don't mind how people decorate, its a rarity that I ever pass anyone!! - My HHA is empty so I have to go to the dream suite or visit towns to see peoples homes!
I want to do my home like a real home, front room, kitchen, garden, bedroom etc but that's just what I want for my home, Maybe if I saw a lot of homes I'd have more of an opinion but as it stands for now, I really enjoy seeing what people do with their homes, It kinda reflects on the person ^^ x

I live in a rural area, so I never get streetpasses no matter how much I walk around. So I wouldn't know what's overdone and what's not.

Hah, I read an article about how Animal Crossing is a metaphor for conformity that centered around the HHA/HRA. I'll see if I can find and link it later.

I don't really care too much what other people want to do with their houses... Sure, I like to look around them, and it's always cool when someone does something different. But I think people should do what they like without worrying about "originality." I'm making a Nintendo exhibit in my museum, and I'm sure 95% of people are doing the same thing. (But what else am I supposed to do with all those items?!)

I don't have any streetpass houses yet T_T
But I dreamsuite a lot, and pretty much every single Japanese town has an egg room. I'm guessing it's because that's the most recent special furniture set for them so it's the most novel, but it's a bit boring from an outsider's perspective.

AC did originate in Japan and, in Japan, conformity is a celebrated way of life. Group norms are far more important and far more valued than individuality. Even visually, the Japanese dress alike. When seasons change, everyone puts on the latest fashionable thing, it's as if some secret memo has been given out in the night, advising every citizen what to wear when they wake up. I remember the first time I visited the country. Suits (the salary men) and uniforms (the children) everywhere in the morning! It was mesmerizing.

Game-wise, I don't care about HHA scores, so I just decorate the way I like my rooms to be. I do have a Japanese-themed room though. Because I'm fascinated by the Japanese culture. It's unlike no other on the planet.

lots of hate on the mermaid stuff *slinks away*

I love making my rooms have every item of a series, BUT I also add other items that either fit the theme of color scheme because it just makes the room look more put together ^__^

imo what bothers me when it comes to the houses I get through streetpass is how messy and uncreative they are and what I mean is that they just threw in furniture in there randomly and didn't even place it so it looks decent so far I've only had 1 good house and it's getting really annoying. :/ also another fact that's annoying is how most of the houses are freaking small and they don't even change the exterior! (most of the time)

Well, my house is not that creative in the first place, so I can't say anything about other's. I also don't get a lot of streetpass, but from what I've seen, yes, the mermaid set is pretty common. I...also have it. But I mix it with the pirate set so it tones down the pink a little bit (and hey, it kinda fits!). Since I'm playing the game slowly with no intention of time traveling or buying whole sets online, I'm just going with the flow with my house, and when I pay it off fully and have tons of furniture to chose from, then I'll try making something less "cookie cutter". My first floor is blue-saphire furniture, the back room is modern-silver with some game machines and the top floor is the mermaid-pirate.
I have the full balloon set in the museum, and a Nintendo exhibit.

I'm trying to find a spot in between 'Cookie Cutter' and 'HHA Approved'; give each room an atmosphere that mixes sets and series. There's the European bedroom (Blue Rococo and Dark Alpine), the trendy living room (a combo of Sleek and Modern), etc. The Nintendo series doesn't mix with other furniture, and isn't very functional, but I like it enough to put it in the museum. To me, when you make every room just a collection of one full series, it takes away the 'house' feel of it. I've got nothing against that style, but it's just not how I decorate.

If things like the Nintendo and Mermaid sets and the Gyroids were orderable people wouldn't feel compelled to keep hold of them and use them in their houses... As it is these items have to be stored somewhere so I think a lot of people inevitably just throw them in a room.

I know Nintendo designed it like this to stop players just cataloging them from each other and getting full sets with no effort but if a player met the conditions to obtain certain things themselves (like the post office savings rewards or certain medal rewards) they should be able to order them IMO. That would solve the obsession most people have with using these sets.

I'm holding my Nintendo items in the museum until I get more of the Egyptian/Space/Western/Japanese furniture.
I using all four characters, so they'll be able to hold all the items I can't order.

I have no problem with any of those overused themes.. like a lot of people are saying, it's silly to be bothered by what someone else does in their house. Besides, if it's overused it doesn't necessarily mean that people are being uncreative, maybe they just like those sets because they're cool. I think what matters more is the way you organize furniture, what you add or take away from the sets, what you customize, what type of room you're trying to create etcetc. I plan on making a Japanese school room or maybe a bathhouse room. I don't think that's cookie-cutter and even if it is, I don't really care.

I don't know if I would consider it a Japanese room but I have an exotic room as my main room. I've always had the exotic room as my main room since gamecube, it's tradition. As for my other rooms I have a kitchen, childrens room, study, and I will have a sleek room when I upgrade my house, the basement will be used for storage. My exhibits at the museum include: Space, Western, Medical, and when I find anything for it, an Egypt room.

Nintendo: In my museum -nearly full set
Japanese: My whole City Folk house was themed after Japanese life so I'm over it.
Gyroid: Nope nothing.
