Colton's Birthday..

Colton recently moved in to my town, I introduced myself but haven't made any further contact with him and after two days I recieved his party invite. I'm aiming to make him move out via the 'ignoring' process so I was just wondering how the birthday party scenarios go down in New Leaf?

Does it start out as a normal day and then when the party starts I can decide whether I want to go or not, or is it like when you have a ceremony after completing a public works project where you get 'teleported' to the location?
I really don't want to have Colton for any longer than I have to and wouldnt look forward to re-starting the process again -.-

Villager parties happen in their homes and one other villager will be at the party celebrating with him.
Only way you would have to "join in" on the party is if you walk into his home the day of the party.
... and if you have trouble finding another villager, chances are they are the one celebrating with him.
