Christmas Lights are Switched on!

I have the lights on my trees today. I love them, they are so pretty and festive.

They looked better in the GCN game IMO. In New Leaf, they are just colourful circles.

I don't remember this before, but...why do only SOME of my cedar trees have lights? Has it always been like that in New Leaf or is it some kind of glitch or new thing they put in with the update?
