Sometimes while talking to each other, villagers will notice each other's catchphrase and pick it up from them. With this bug I've been seeing, villager A will "notice" villager B saying their own original catchphrase (villager B is not actually using this catchphrase) and ask if they can use it. Villager B will agree, and villager A will start using villager A's own default catchphrase.

One of many examples 😝:

I've seen this quite a few times now, and it's been happening for a while. At first I thought it was just Kody that was affected by this glitch because it happened to him several times, but I've now had many villagers do this.

Have you had this happen at all on your island, or seen anyone talk about it?

Not a bug, it's feature. There's some dialogue you can catch between two villagers where it'll spread. See my tweet as an example. You can get Isabelle to reset it OR you can just let them keep that picked up phrase until the villager asks you to set one for them. As far as I can tell, once you set a villager catchphrase with one you picked they will never change it.

Diana's catchphrase has been "for real doe" since like May and she hasn't changed it. If you can't think of a catchphrase, you can just set it whatever their default is. I set Apollo's phrase to "pah" when he asked because I didn't like any of the ones I've given him and I couldn't think of a new one.

I know it's generally a feature, I'm talking about a character picking up a catchphrase that the other isn't actually using. Like in my example, Megan was saying "sundae". I don't remember what Raymond's catchphrase was at the time at the time, but he picked up "crisp," his default catchphrase, from her.

Did you adopt either Megan or Raymond by chance? This is something new but I don't think a lot of people have reported it to Nintendo

Well I had to look up what Megan's default catchphrase was and it's "sundae".

I think you just found and edge case where two villagers have this "sharing catchphrase" chat and they both have their original catchphrase. There is no new catchphrase for Raymond to pick up from Megan so he sticks with the default. There's probably a property for the default catchphrase that never changes and another property for a set catchphrase and it falls back to the default of Raymond when he gets an empty or null value back from trying to get Megan's set catchphrase.

That makes sense, I'm going to see if my other recordings fit that or not.

I’ve seen that happen before too. It’s like they’re trying to share the catchphrase, but they can’t because they both have their default one. I‘ve briefly changed some of my villages catchphrases, but reset it back to original with Isabelle when I realized it would spread around. Maybe that causes the bug. None of my villagers have been adopted from someone else. I found them all on mystery islands or the campsite.

I don't know that I'd consider this a bug, necessarily, because nothing out of the norm is happening; it was likely more of an oversight if anything. But I'm being pedantic at that point, haha.

None of my villagers has taken anyone else's in this game, weird. They ask me to change it occasionally but i don't. it old games they always took each others phrases but it odd not one of mine has this time. hmmmm.......
