I recently bought the original Animal Crossing for GameCube from a local used game shop. I have an old Wii but have never used it to play a GameCube game before. I know I need to have a GameCube Controller and Memory card in order to actually play the game, but I popped it in just to see if it would at least work. It didn't. All I got was this:

Download-File

Wii games work perfectly fine on the Wii but AC for GC just won't. The disc looks to be in pretty good shape, so I'm not sure if it's just the disc itself not wanting to read or the GameCube function of my Wii not working since I've never used it before/don't have any other GC games to try.

I am am going to trade games with a friend to try to rule out what's wrong. By that I mean I'll give them my game to try in one of their systems that they know works and in turn they'll let me borrow one of their GC games to try in my Wii. I'm still posting this though just to see if someone has any ideas what may be wrong.

Sounds like a disc issue. Even if a disc looks clean, there may still be a fingerprint or specks of dust in a crucial part of the disc. I use Clorox Disinfecting Wipes when I have disc issues and then dry them off with a microfiber cloth. If you cleaned the disc off and there are still issues, I would see if you have a trustworthy used game store nearby that would be willing to clean the disc for you.

If your Wii can bring up a pop-up from AC:PG, your Wii should be fine with reading GCN software. Also, if you are looking for decent GCN Controllers, Smash 4 GCN Controllers are sold brand new at places where new Wii U stuff is found.
