I agree - I'm glad diving is in the game, but having so many DIYs (and creatures) tied a to a mechanic that is very repetitive was not a good idea, imo. I've only been diving a few times and I don't really feel motivated to keep doing it even though I know there is more stuff to collect.
I feel the same way. I work for nearly 9 hours a day when I arrive home I'm dead tired I only have about 4 hours to play. It also takes me about 20-25 tries to find a scallop. Once I was so lucky to find one on the second try and thankfully Pascal showed up. Imagine finding a scallop for a long while and Pascal not finding. So far I've gotten 2 diys and 2 Pearl's and yesterday I didn't even bother swimming.

Yeah, that's why I never got the entire pirate set from Pascal in New Leaf. I never spent the time to find scallops. I do think he should hand out all the DIYs first, and then clothing, and then pearls with doubles of everything randomly.
If I don't get all the DIYs from him by mid-August, I will probably never get the complete mermaid set for a while since I'm going to be too busy to play daily. Even if I do, I might not want to dive every day until I get them. And, I've made peace with that idea. I can understand how other people will find that annoying.

for me personally, diving isn’t all that tedious for me. sure it can be frustrating, especially if pascal doesn’t show up for the first scallop so you have to catch more, but it’s a lot more fun for me than trying to farm diys from balloons or any of that. and plus, pascal is one of my favourite npcs and so i enjoy seeing him everyday aha
Yeah this is what I'm gonna end up doing. Buying the DIYs I want.

Player 2 spent 45 minutes diving and found 2 scallops and no Pascal. Save/quit, closed the game and started it again. 2nd item was a scallop and Pascal popped up. Got a pearl.

I dive with 3 characters for Pascal. It’s odd. Sometimes it’ll be really quick finding him, other times it takes 15 minutes to find him one one person. I feel that for the effort at least until you find them all it should be skewed a bit more towards diy recipes.

I found 2 scallops fairly easily the one day I went diving but the otter never showed up because my gates were open hoping this person would bring donate me a million bells which didnt happen.. yet

I've always found a scallop within 40 dives so it's not too much of an issue for me. My issue is that he keeps giving me pearls instead 
since the update, I've gotten 2 DIYs only and 5 pearls! And as a non time traveler, it *kinda* sucks. However, I really don't need to complete the set right away as my entire town is a mess and even if I had the DIYs I wouldn't even craft them until much later. So I think it's ok for now. I'm sorry RNG sucks for you.. i hope it gets better!

Personally I like it, gives me a reason to go swimming and something else to do everyday, but I do get why it can be frustrating.

I find it very frustrating, I almost feel like I can’t enjoy diving/swimming because I feel like I have to find scallops for pearls/DIYs and in my case they don’t pop out as often, overall to receive a pearl over a DIY now that’s pretty disappointing.
I've been searching for scallops so many times, I can almost identify the bubble pattern it has so I can already avoid the others. But its spawn rate is really varied. Sometimes, I get it as soon as I enter the waters. Then sometimes, I come across it after a whole lap around my island.
When I finally get my scallop and Pascal shows up BUT he didn't give me my desired DIY, I quit the game without saving (save scum). Of course, I need to search for the scallop again (and his appearance doesn't always happen on the first scallop), but at least he'll give me something else this time.

that's why it gets frustrating for me. sometimes it's easy to find a scallop, sometimes it's not. but most of the time, it takes me so much time and STILL, i keep getting pearls for BOTH of my characters. makes it seem like a waste of time. can't they distribute it more evenly or at least give out more pearls when we complete the DIYs?long story short: diving is FUN. i really loved this activity on ac. but this mechanic being tied to it makes it a chore.
i have 2 characters btw that's why i takes me an hour. including the times i have to get up and sell the creatures to clear pockets then try again. i mostly play my 2nd character when i get a pearl, and guess what, i get pearl from them too so that's when i'm like i've had it.

exactly that's what i'm saying though, i like diving but he should stop giving me pearls and give me more diys. make that time i've spent diving worth it, because if this becomes a daily pattern i'd rather do something else honestly
Personally, I find swimmnig and diving the most relaxing thing to do in New Horizons right now.
The rhythm of pressing A with your strokes (don't mash A!) , the fact that there is no tools that can break, the sound effects of being in the water... It is all just right for me I guess.
Not the mention the fact that it is pretty good money and I feel like my bags are full in no time. And after selling you get to jump back into the water doing a fancy front flip! Wooohooo!

I have no problem finding scallops within half an hour, I usually watch something while diving, but I hate how often he's giving pearls instead of DIYs. Gotten pearls 3 days in a row with both of my characters. He didn't even show up for the second character yesterday.
