Can you give me good things to aim for. I have just reset and am hoping to make the perf town 
Can't get back into ACNL...

Well, you just started, so there are TONS of things to do...
-Make new friends!
-Wait a few days to get your mayor approval.
-Sell seashells and fruit to make money.
-Buy a net, shovel, and fishing rod.
-Go catch some bugs and fish! Try filling up your encyclopedia, or donate them to the museum.
-Dig up fossils and donate them!
-Buy furniture and decorate your home to how you want it!
-Plant flowers and trees anywhere to your liking!
-Town ordinances!
-PWPs!
-Look forward to unlocking more and more as you play (Dream Suite, Island, Club LOL, etc.)
-Go on tours at the island!
-Stick around here to aim to get your dreamies!
-Buy clothes and dress to your liking!
-Go swimming and get as many sea creatures you can!
-Earn badges!
-Design your town how you want it- Plants, PWPs, villagers, themes, paths, you name it.
Sorry for all that, but it's the little things that get me. Just enjoy your peaceful life in New Leaf and extend your creativity. c:

This is so helpful! I'm aiming for dreamies, get all the shops and finish my house!
big part of acnl is completing EVERYTHING. museum, catalog, encyclopedias, etc etc.
unlock all shops, PWPs, etc
themes are a big part too, people build their whole towns around themes like modern, space, fairy-tale, apocolyptic, rainy, and more. it makes the game really fun. theres a couple challenges you can look around for, like 'no plot resetting/TTing/whatever'

If you want to eat some time, you could always plot reset your next 5 villagers

The suggestions above me are really good.
But at this point it's best to wait until the new game comes out for the Wii U.

What got me to come back was the contests here. In a sense, getting invested in AC communities helps keep interest, as it presents new opportunities (e.g., the fair contests, organizing multi-player sessions, etc), provides new perspectives on the game, etc.
