Can you use the Nintendo Online app after your subscription ends?

I'm only going to have a free trial , but I'm interested in the Nintendo Online app. I think the island newspaper is so cute! It would make sense considering the name of the service, but I was hoping...

No it doesn’t work without Nintendo online.

Unfortunately, if you try to open up the app without a current subscription, you get this screen:

I discovered this a while ago too it I was so sad I just wanted to see check the item app. To see if I had owned a certain item before I cataloguing it at a friends island.
