I don't think so. I can't test it because my 3DS is getting repaired by Nintendo. But I couldn't even drop items in the river last time I remember.

It is possible in the Japanese cart using a glitch I have heard such as pwp glitch. Using Isabelle and the throwing beans.

i wish but no, youre technically walking on top of the water when you trip into the river on us/eu cartridges

youd need an unpatched japanese 3ds/cart, which is p much like impossible to find now?

Japanese versions have a lot of funky glitches we don't have, having a patched version and all. Glitches could be fun, but some of Japanese glitches freak me out tbh.

Nah, I tried it. I even tried planting them on the cliff edges, but still nothing. They probably use some kind of expensive cheat thingy, or maybe action replay.

Hmmm I wonder what date they released the "patched" version then. I don't think its impossible, there will be some out there, some used or some not. Unless I am missing some sort of news story where they recalling most of the carts... Is there anyway of telling the different of between which is patched and which is not when buying?

I tried planting flowers and getting Isabelle to place PWPs in the rivers, however...
- the game tells me that I cannot plant flowers there
and
- when I try to glitch out towards the rivers (trapping myself into a corner, dig out an item, ground starts shaking, then run), it doesn't let me dig the last hole (unless I was being too careless), so maybe the game patched that up as well
