Can villagers catch bugs with their nets?

During Bug Tourneys, they will start to crouch like your mayor would when you press A and sneak, but I don't think I've seen them actually catch one :/

The most I've seen is them creep up on the bugs.

I saw one of my villagers try to catch a bug once, but they missed for some reason.

Here's one of Walker creeping up on a bug. This one always makes me laugh because of how his head is turned. The bug he's looking at had just made a jump from the left, causing Walker to turn his head like that without moving the rest of his body.

A pic of Lolly and Cookie stalking a cicada. If I remember it correctly, as soon as I scared it off, Lolly hit the tree with her net while Cookie just went on her merry way.

I've seen my villagers stalking bugs with their nets during Bug-Off's and I once saw Pinky strike, but she missed completely. I've yet to see any villagers catch a bug, if they even can.
