I've got Julian from a friend moving in, will he have the furniture / clothes the friend gifted or something? I have heard conflicting reports.

yes, your julian will still have anything your friend gifted him. original just means they haven't been gifted anything, so their outfits and houses are completely untouched.
I do believe they don't carry over the furniture they've been given though, but I could be wrong. I believe their houses reset, but their wardrobes don't.

Can confirm gifted furniture does not travel. Also clothes and catchphrases can be reset by talking to Isabelle so I don't really get the obsession with original villagers?

I've heard reports that even if you reset them by talking to Isabelle, the clothes are still in their wardrobe and will continue to cycle through them.

Yes, complaining to Isabelle will only change their clothes temporarily. They can and will still put them on. This is how it was in NL and I'm not really sure why it's a feature at all. It's actually completely pointless to have them change out of something you don't like (or perhaps it's inappropriate) if they're just going to change back into it. Seems like a huge oversight to me.

Also, gifted furniture will end up in the lost and found in the Resident Services.

I didn't know this! What if there are multiple gifted furniture items? Do they all go to the lost and found, or is it just one?

I can't remember what happened when my villagers moved out but I think a couple things show up if not all. Someone else will have to weigh in.

Complaining to Isabelle stops them from wearing custom designs. People can hang up their designs in your ables without having to ask you if they shop there. People can make inappropriate designs and hang them up

does anyone know if this applies to starter villagers (they have a house w/ diy furniture and a sleeping bag rather than their usual home)? i've always wondered about this. my first two starters are gone, but i dislike the starter homes and wouldn't want to adopt a villager if they were someone's starter.

From my understanding only "starter" villagers get the home reset when adopted from someone.
Non-starter villagers you've gifted lots of bugs and furniture? It stays. I've seen people complain about having purchased a villager and their home has ugly, non-original item in the home. Here is a thread from someone else as "proof" that this is the case... reasons why if it matters to you to ask the person selling/giveaway the villager.

Also, as said from those above, complaining to Isabell about their clothing is temporary.
This includes the villager wearing custom designs from another village. Which nintendo needs to fix ASAP.
I'm an adult and I am in multiple animal crossing groups. Many of the custom designs they create are VERY not appropriate for a kids game. Rarely any of their codes being removed by nintendo btw. Some do though. Its funny seeing them throw a fit about Nintendo removing their design for others to download their creation that depicts full frontal nudity in great detail... like... come on... even if you don't give out the code to it to anyone but adults, mistypes COULD happen and some kid could end up on it. o.o
The whole reason this was implemented in NL was for if you got a villager from another town that had offensive (Nazi shirts happened a lot back then...) or inappropriate (bewbs =3) designs you could report it so they would no longer wear the not family friendly clothing.
But even custom clothing the villagers can sometimes cycle back through to put on the lovely "SLUT" shirt from their previous island... there was a thread about this probably a month back or so?
