Can someone explain how villager trading works?

I'm confused about how people trade / sell their villagers.
From what i understand, you TT until you see that villager in boxes.. but then, how do you know they're going to move to the recipients town?

Well there are some complications, such as if you visit an island with a voided villager and they latch onto you and take the plot instead, but the basic premise is as simple as that!
