can anyone explain how amiibos work

i’ve never used them ever how do they even work for acnh? and do you jst buy any cards or do you need a specific series to work for acnh thnx

you can use any animal crossing amiibo to bring characters to harvey's island or get posters of them
or
you can use villager amiibos on the machine in resident services to invite them to the campsite (you will need to do this 3 times) and that villager will move in

i'm not completely sure which series has which characters but there's loads of good ones in each so any of them are good choices but you only get 3 cards per pack
