I want to put 2 cedar trees on either side of a bench that's near the river. Here are the photos ( sorry for the bad quality)

Can a tree grow in the middle of the holes on both sides?

Yes, you can grow trees there (I assume those holes are on the northern half of your map where cedars can grow). As long as you can dig holes one space north, south, east, and west of the location, and there is no building, tree, or cliff wall occupying the diagonal spaces, you can plant a tree there.

Unfortunately, that's the southern half :( I just read something on cedars. It's a shame cedars can't grow everywhere:( I wanted to put a bunch of cedars on my southern half. I guess now I have to get saplings now

Nope it's true, cedars can only grow on the northern half of your town. I'm not sure why that is but, it is.

Edit: but it literally just cuts the map in half to differentiate between north and south, so the cedars can still be underneath your river if they are in the top half area of your map.

Cedars can only grow in the Northern part of your town. I'm not sure why, but it's true.

Yeah it's a really dumb restriction. I used to wonder why my cedars always wilted and came to find that little trinket of knowledge zzz

The reason why cedar trees can only grow in the northern half of your town is probably because pine trees mainly exist in northern latitudes. It really doesn't make much sense for cedar trees to be able to grow near your beach. Although, it is kind of odd that you can only grow cedar trees on the northern half of your town, but you can grow tropical fruit trees anywhere on the map. Winter affects the whole town anyway, so it is kind of silly that the developers would try to keep it kind of realistic with cedar trees, but not much else climate-wise in the game.
