I read a post somewhere when I first started out and wanted to know about the type and it was a guy who said he asked a Japanese friend when you would call someone uchi, she said it was hard to translate to English but big sister was not close. She said the only way to explain was that uchis are more like normal..as in real people with nice sides and moody sides more realistic while the normals in the game are not at all like real normals they are the ones whose name is off they are more like big sister IMO. I wish I had the link, game normals are like stereotypes of insecure girls her opinion not mine the must be sweet and nice bake and read but uchi she said was supposed to be more a mixed realistic version of a normal girl. I will try to find article for those interested as I do not do the interview justice.

In my own opinion I do not find them tomboyish at all, they are mostly pretty and I would say rebel is a better word..or normal and change that name as how many people do you know more like a uchi than a normal it seems outdated maybe homemaker or retro for norms but then again retro would be it's own cool thing. I agree about smug though they aren't smug...they are flashy or flirty but smug indicates negative and narcissistic.

I thought 'big sister' was what they were called in English, I'm fine with that, so voted 'other'.

They call uchi characters aneki in the Japanese game.

Calling smugs, smug bothers me more than uchi.

I think the reason why they are called smug is because when you Google "smug" in Google images, you get lots of handsome looking gentlemanly man looking smug:



But yes, I get what you mean. A more accurate descriptor would be "Suave".

If "Uchi" comes from the term "Uchi-Soto" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uchi-soto, and the meaning in Japanese is "Uchi" = "in-group", "Soto" being "out-group"...

...then technically, "Uchi" could possibly be almost "Homie" in American slang. Yes, I know it is not the equivalent translation. Still.

I think Tomboy fits the personality better, but I also don't think it matters that much. The personality types are never mentioned in-game, right? Some people play AC without even knowing the names of the personality types (that's how I was back in WW), so their names don't have very much importance to the game. If you want to start referring to them as tomboy/big sister or something else, most people would probably know what you're talking about even though its not the "right" term. c:

I've heard a few names for Uchi villagers, and one thing they are actually currently known as are: big sister types. I like that, because that's sort of what they feel like, to me.

It's weird that sweet, insecure girls are considered "normal" in the western context.

Ok just to confirm. "Uchi" in the way the characters use the word in the Japanese version of the game means "me/my/mine/I". It literally means "my house", but it's a type of speaking like instead of saying "My mom" they will say "my house's mom" or instead of "my shirt" they will say "my house's shirt". It sounds weird in English but it's a style of speaking in Japanese used by certain types of people. Actually people refer to themselves differently depending on their age/gender/personality in Japanese.
The different personality types in AC do this too:
Normal/Futsuu (Normal) refer to themselves as "watashi"
Peppy/Genki (Energetic) refer to themselves as "atai"
Snooty/Otona(Grownup) refer to themselves as "atashi"
Uchi/Aneki(Big Sis) refer to themselves as "uchi"


I think the confusion with the name came from someone looking at a Japanese website or guidebook, seeing that the aneki type refer to themselves as "uchi" and thought that was the personality type name. But it would be like calling the normal personality type "watashi" type. (For anyone studying Japanese - it sounds weird right?)

Sorry for the Japanese lesson but there seems to be so much confusion about the meaning of the word uchi, and the way it is used in the game is a type of slang and can't be found in a dictionary or google. if you search it you just get the literal "my house". So I just wanted to clear that up.

If anyone is wondering, I live in Japan, speak Japanese, am playing the Japanese version of AC so I'm not just making this stuff up.
