Bush question!

I don't understand bushes QUITE yet, so I was a little surprised when my set up ended up like this:
O - free space
S - bush (alive)
X - bush (dead)

S O O O S
S O S O S
S O X O S
S O X O S
S O X O S
S O S O S
S O O O S
O O O O S

Why did those 3 die, exactly? I was under the impression that they only really died if they were the 13th touching.

Sometimes it has to do with planting order if you have a lot of bushes and trees in one area. Did you plant all of these bushes at the same time or were the ones to the right and the left already there? I always try to start planting in the middle, let those grow a day to make sure they'll live, then work my way outward. And once I had to cut down some nearby trees to replant one that got destroyed by a random move in. But once I got the order right, I was able to get everything to regrow.

I actually ended up planting them all at once. That's probably why they didn't last, then
