Why is the dialogue in ACNL so short?
Whenever I talk to a villager they say about 1 or sentences and then that's it! That's the whole conversation! If I try talking again they ask if I wanted to talk every. single. time. like I've been away for a few minutes or so.
Not only that but A LOT of the time villagers repeat what they just said. It's feels really strange and well.. crappy and lazy. Why aren't there deeper or at least lengthier and more diverse conversations? It feels like they're just soulless puppets. I thought that AC at it's core was all about the villagers? :/

You've made me feel the same.... well they'd have a time limit and would of focused on everything else and might've not had the time to develop the conversations, I guess, this was just a thought

Dialogue in the old games was generally more in-depth and more entertaining. It dropped in quality in NL a bit and I think that's because they wanted to focus on the shiny new graphics and the new mayoral duties a bit more, plus everything else. Dialogue probably wasn't that much of a concern back in development.

:D that's basically exactly what I thought!

I completely agree with you. I just hope that they improve on it more on their next game.

I agree. I really hope they add more dialog in the new games. :/

I know what you mean, my villagers often do repeat a LOT of what they say. :(

I completely agree. The greatest aspect for me in the game has always been the villagers. So it saddens me in games like city folk and new leaf that they don't have much to say, as I love getting to know my villagers. Also because of this fact, you can never really tell whether you're good friends with a villager or not, as they all generally say the same thing, so I usually end up going back to wild world alot or population growing for the dialog. I really hope they develop the dialog abit more and add alot more in the next game. I also feel like the smug personality doesn't have that much dialog or depth compared to other personalities.

I definitely agree. I'd really like a lot more dialogue, especially when you talk to villagers a few times in one day. My favourite is when villagers are talking to each other and you're overhearing their conversation.

I hope so much that the dialogue is more varied and interesting in future games - I feel that HHD gave villagers a bit more individual personality, so it'd be great if the next main series game reflected that, and each villager has some unique text, rather than personality types being identical in all but design.

That sounds saddening.
Can you give me an example of a conversation in older games? (ACNL is my first AC)

On older games, the villagers were a lot meaner, especially the crankies and snooties. In NL they tried to make it more kid friendly.
I think it started when they heard Resetti in older games make some players cry.

Ok, I actually mean more like length and depth of the conversation, is there a dialogue tree? Does it feel like the writers actually created something interesting to bond with the characters? And do your answers have consequences?

Because of Fuchsia I now know I can pick dust off of a carpet with duct tape.

This makes me wanna buy the older games to see the difference. NL is my first too. I've been wanting WW for a while anyway...

I agree... Compared to the older games, the NL villagers are so boring. Honestly, I miss how mean they used to be. A lot of people disagree with me, but at least then they had personality. I felt like it was rewarding to be able to befriend the rudest, most cranky villager in the entire town. Now they're all watered down and the same... Not to mention, half of my villagers don't even have conversations anymore. They just make quick, absent minded comments that have no depth or personality.

Were all the villagers in the older games rude/mean or were there also nice villagers?

WW and CF was much more villager centric I believe. I remember getting requests to buy a rainbow shirt for Rodeo in WW - nothing else would do. And that was what it was like. They were much more specific. Filling a request could take days. And when you did it then it was a huge deal.

Yes, this! I literally felt like I had to earn it to be friends with the snooties and crankies. It felt much more rewarding, compared to new leaf.

I remember one time, Joey said to Lucy in a conversation in wild world that he wants to get married and to which Lucy was surprised then he revealed he was going to get married for the buffet and cake. LOL

and this is also a pretty good example:
conversation example.jpg

One time Chief asked me how do I feel about him, to which I answered I like him and he replied with: "You like me, huh! Man that makes me happier than you know!"

Another time on one of the villagers birthday parties, he was like "Do you think you and Kody will come to my birthday party? I'll be pretty bummed if you dont, Munchkin! Seriously, harrumph!"

Then when talking about the able sisters he said: "Take the able sisters, Mabel and Sable! They MAJORED in drama!"

There were nice villagers too, but they weren't like they are now. Normals and other typically nice animals could be rude sometimes too, but it wasn't like in a mean way like snooties and crankies could be. Snooties and crankies could be very insulting at times.

Throwing this under a spoiler just in case:

I also miss how you could get background information from Blathers, the Able sisters, Pelly/Phyllis/Pete, it was so cute!
