If you don't have a smug villager in your town (and have all the other personalities) and are at 8 villagers, you can try the house plot trick to get Marshal. Google it, took me 30 min to get him this way

I'm pretty sure you get a default move-in for the personality that you don't have, and the villager is picked randomly out of that personality.

Nop, if done right it's a diff villager. In those 30 min I saw like 20 smugs

For future trades, don't do it with anyone who sounds suspsicious or anything like that. Ask for proof and make sure that the villager you're looking to get is theirs and no someone else's.

The game will give you the personality you don't have the longest. I didn't have both smug and jock but the plots that I saw were all from smugs

Yeah, the villager changes, but you don't get to reset to choose where they move in.
