Showdown isn't required but it is extremely recommended since you can build any Pokemon you want on there without having to breed it or work for it at all, so it allows a more fair playing ground to test your teams. Also, tournaments are held in its chatrooms from time to time to help you see what other people are using that's successful. It's a really good competitive resource.

I won both matches, though on the first one he misclicked and didn't choose a 3rd Pokemon for the battle.... xD

Was fun though, and that's what counts! I learned a lot from our battle.
