Birthday presents

I always have the worst time trying to come up with a gift for villagers. I use the Thonky guide, and try to get clothing so they don't mess their houses up, but I'm running into a wall just now.

Beardo is my next villager birthday, and I want to get something nice. He often talks about making music boxes from the giant clam shells (no other villager mentions it, so it could be a smug thing), so I was wondering about giving him one with his favorite song.

Has anyone else gifted a music box? And if so, how was it received?

I've never did it myself, but I also read that it's not confirmed whether they can ever display it on their houses or not.
