Best way to change villager clothes?

Really tired of them displaying their shirts in their house. I don't control what everyone is wearing, if it looks good on them--I leave it, but sometimes it just bothers you.
Gwen shared her blue diamond tee (which looks amazing on her) to Marshal, and it's just NOT IT for him. Static & Keaton also started wearing the winter folk sweater, it's the summer buddy. Not to mention Keaton's house is beach themed.

Should I carry the clothes and parade it in front of them? (Not working so far)

Is there a better time when we send the shirts to them? Like, nighttime, so they'd wear it next day?

And I know if they buy from Re-Tail they will just treat it as furniture!

I know you can gift them clothes in hopes that they put them on :v I think if you keep gifting them the shirt they'll eventually wear it, but I'm not sure

They do, I've gifted to one of my villagers. Marcie. I pretty much tried 4x. And entering her house reminds me of my effort as there's like 3 displayed clothes lmao. It's so ridiculous. I wish there's another way. Or a trick a least.

I’ve had the most success changing their clothes by sending the desired shirt via letter. Then what I do is change the time to 4:58pm and wait inside my house when the bell rings at 5:00pm. Then I find the villager I sent the clothes to and see if they’ve changed. If they haven’t I quit without saving and reset the time to 4:58pm again. Rinse and repeat until they’re wearing the shirt! It could take a few resets before they decide to wear it.

When I’m invited to their house I make sure to buy any shirts they might be displaying, too.

The 4:58pm trick is smart! Earlier, I gifted Marshal his denim jacket around 4:30p, but around 5p I was outside & so was he, so I know he won't just change to it. I had to reset as I knew he'd just display it. Would definitely try what you do lol. I love how us Animal Crossing players would resort to these type of tricks for such things.
