The only drawback for me is that rotten fruit does not attract ants, so it becomes an issue if you are trying to complete your encyclopedia and museum.
You can get ants on a piece of candy; and you can get ants AND flies on a rotten turnip. I bought a turnip and let it rot just for this, my friends who have beautiful town have been passing it around for the ants and flies.
