A disease instead of a basically harmless animal (save those that actually do attack animals, which remain in the few), I'd go with chicken pox. I don't know, maybe it's because it's a sickness that you can die from if not treated.

They scare me when they fly low though.

Chicken pox I can't remember, but bats are harmless.
