Hi! I have a bit of a problem. It’s been around an hour and 30 minutes and not a single balloon has spawned on either side of the island. I’ve checked 20 minutes on one side (running up and down the beach to check for balloons whenever it hits xx:x4/5 and xx:x9/0), and 20 minutes on the other, before switching to the other side of the island to check if the balloons are spawning there instead but alas, not a single balloon! I even talked to the Nooklings and exited and re-entered the game to see if that would make a difference but nothing seems to work. I’ve time travelled to the 11th of December to try to get the snowflake recipes, are they perhaps timelocked? Is this problem happening for anyone else or am I just having incredibly bad luck?? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Check the way the wind blows smoke from the chimneys - that should at least tell you which side to check. Otherwise, it honestly could just be pretty bad luck that you didn't get that many spawns in the 40 min. on the correct side, and/or managed to miss the balloons that did spawn. If you're not already using the jail bars method - basically just build a wall of jail bars with 1/2 space in between each - I found that incredibly helpful for getting more balloons.
As for the recipes, they shouldn't be time-locked, since they were in the game before the update, if I'm not mistaken. Only the update content, such as Toy Day, should be time-locked.

balloon RNG is on nobody's side, let's be real. first of all definitely check the way the wind is blowing as that'll tell you which side to check - I normally find that up until 6pm balloons spawn on my right beach, and after 6pm on the left but that could just be my island. also I never see them at xx:x4 or xx:x9, always xx:x5/0 and later - I think it must take them that first minute of 'spawn' to travel to a point that is visible. other than that, I have no advice - good luck!!
Whenever I have this bad luck with balloons (at least 30 minutes of nothing), I just restart my game and hope that the RNG is better.
Or... just try at a later time. Sometimes when my luck is bad in the morning, I get really lucky in the evening.

Thank you so much for your replies everyone!! ;7; They were all very helpful, especially the checking the chimney smoke direction and the jail bars trick! Also I just loaded up the game and tried again after a short break and I finally got a balloon!! It must’ve just been horribly bad luck after all. xD The RNG can really be hard sometimes!

this happened to me too when I was trying to farm balloons. from what I've seen online, the best way to farm balloons is to use the jail bars method, if you are able. that way there is no question if you miss a balloon or not since they will automatically come to you, and if you do miss one or two its RNG's fault!
