What I like to do and has worked well in the past for me is make sure that I have the full amount of the preorder ready for the Sunday before the release date. So for this example, it would be Sunday the 24th of May.
This has never failed me and I have four pages of orders on Nintendo Store.
Just some wisdom there for you.

I already have about half the cash saved up anyway (I had my eye on DK:Tropical Freeze). I'll probably put it towards this though and have the rest with a month to spare :3 I always like to have the money ready ASAP anyway so that I don't have to worry about it as the 'deadline' gets closer.
Pre-ordered the pack with the female inkling Amiibo now though so I'm at least committed to it now xD
