Hi, Luna. You discovered an 'old' topic, so sorry for the late reply.
Donations. Someone I did not know donated me 4,000 because I was the first person he thought of. Then a certain friend has donated me tens of thousands because she is crazy nice like that. Also, while I was cycling villagers, I sold 'tier 1' villagers for a few hundred TBT Bells each, but it was the members adopting 'tier 5' - 'tier 3' villagers who were the most generous: several gave me 100 TBT Bells each, or even collectibles (e.g., one member donated me two birthstones).
That said, I also made TBT Bells by posting, selling 'gardening packages' (i.e., a bunch of bush starts with select gardening tools, etc), etc., but those other means of making money only got me a tiny sum compared to the total amount I ever received.
In short, mostly from donation.
