A lot of it does come off as wonky, but I've had a few paintings work for me. I found out that simple paintings with a zoomed up feature (like focusing on a face, a ship ect.) comes off better with the picture tool. If a painting is too zoomed out or busy it's becomes too muddled. Here's an example of the paintings I used:

In those cases, I had to zoom in on the ships and the man's face and the colors contrasted enough so the image shows up. I like the low-res myself, since it looks a little spooky which is exactly what I'm looking for!
