Are Villager Move-Ins now Invite Only?

I heard the succeeding three villagers of the peppy, normal and lazy variety will move in to your island when you invite them upon meeting them via the Nook Miles Island. What happens if you didn’t invite anyone? Would there be no move-ins at all until you invite someone else or will the game just randomly assign villagers?

Oh thank you so much for this!!! I’ve only been to two Nook Miles islands and I didn’t invite the second villager I saw cause I don’t like her much and I started to panic that maybe if I don’t invite people, the game might randomly give me someone I would hate. If that’s the case I better go on more trips and make sure I invite someone I could live with rather than leaving it up to chance.

How long does it take the villagers to move in?
I invited my 3 yesterday but no one moved in yet. Do I need to upgrade to the shop?

I've invited 1 from a island but Nook just said 3 are ready to arrive. Are the 3 nook is talking about the villagers i met? or 3 randoms?

Thanks so much! I went on another tour and got super lucky this time cause I got Molly and she cried cause she thought I wasn’t serious when I invited her. Lol. Such a cutieeee.
