Are the mysterious island villagers really totally random? (peppy and uchi curse)

Yeah it's a curse! I never saw a cat in an island and barely any squirrels! But frickin Benedict? I saw him at least two times. What. are. the. odds.

The only cat I encountered was Felicity and she's one of the few cats I don't care about. I was like wtf so many cats in this game and of all things she shows up

Chickens are my most disliked animal species besides the mice. I would have had reseted immediately if I had seen Plucky „shivers“ or one of the jock chickens as my starter villagers

I went to 20 islands today looking for a smug, any smug, because I haven’t had one since Colton moved out weeks(?) ago. Finally gave up and scanned Lucha’s amiibo. Probably I will wake up to the plot sold to a fourth jock.

The islands, unfortunately, are not guaranteed to give the personality you're missing. When you leave for an island, I believe the game generates the species first and then it generates the personality. So you're fighting against a system that can give you a shot at all villagers. I believe there is a theory going around that certain personalities appear at certain times but I'm not sure how accurate any of that is or if it's true.

If you don't have your dreamies' personality in town and aren't afraid of time travel, the campsite method might be more helpful to you.

I actually heard that according to the data the game rolls for a species, all of them having an equal chance no matter who you have on your island already, and then doesn’t roll for a personality at all, just any villager of the chosen species. So I don’t know if the thing about certain personalities appearing at certain times is true but then again, it’s not like I’ve looked at the data myself. I’d still say the campsite is most reliable when looking for a certain personality until we know more for sure.

Do you know when I can start to search for them with a chance to encounter the cranky and smug ones? I've already build 3 new houses and 1 new villager has moved in, so right now I have 3 of them and waiting for 2 more to move in

You only have the 2 starters at the moment? if so, then you will only get Peppy, lazy and normal during your tours right now. You will be able to find the rest later on.

After the last one moves in, your RS tent will upgrade to a building and you will get a chance to build the campsite after that. Only after inviting your first camper you will be able to buy more plots and encounter all personality types on islands. The first camper is smug in often cases.
