Anyone think there should be fewer features locked behind Nintendo Online?

You don't have to get the membership and you can always play the game with local friends. The membership is just an encouragement to play with people all over the world!
I was trying to play AC:NH with my friend (we were on the same internet and like five feet from each other.) The local play disconnected within 5 minutes. Honestly, the only option is to buy online.

To everyone complaining about how “bad“ Nintendo’s online is... its something that literally costs like 5 cents a day to use, maybe you need to lower your expectations a lil

and also consider the fact that maybe it’s so “bad” because it’s so cheap lol

I mean Heck the Neopets and Moviestarplanet (two online websites I played when I was younger) their memberships a year last I check were nearly 70 dollars!! NSO is 20 dollars a year. You can't get cheaper than that.

I mean depends on the cliff if you ask me. I mean I understand what you're saying the NSO membership isn't amazing but at this point Nintendo is doing whatever they can to get money. Plus we can comfortably say that the money is being used to better ACNH. I mean how else can they afford to provide free Dlc for the game? That cost lots of money to even do that. It's amazing Nintendo can even do that with the cheap rates they charge for the membership. You don't have to get the membership and you can always play the game with local friends. i literally have the membership, so i couldn't be speaking any more from experience than i already am. hell, i literally even went and looked up what the xbox and playstation online services offer. needless to say, while they may require double the price, they offer more than double what nintendo currently does. if you want to defend the rich, that's fine, but i've got no interest in doing the same.

a lot of the dlc is already pre-existing content so that argument goes out the window imo. it's a matter of porting and updating assets that are already available more than it is creating new ones from scratch -- which is what would actually cost all that money. money they have in spades too, mind you, so let's not pretend they can't afford it.

Yeah my cousin and I played a little bit one day on local and somehow the game said 'Someone left silently' or whatever even though none of us were idle or doing anything that would cause a spike in connection. I mean we were 5 feet apart lol.

Pretty much what I said a few posts ago. My cousin has Xbox and PS online and they offer a lot more. I would rather pay more $ for dedicated servers, real save storage, and features than to get a subpar service. They should've redid the service to be like 'basic, good, premium'

Nintendo... is a business... the entire point is to make money...........................

To people saying that everything in New Leaf used to be free, I don't it is fair to compare different games and gaming era's.

Unless we can look in the financial accounts of Nintendo, we really can't tell whether they are making a ton of money with the online service or just scraping by. Also, the free amiibo update for New Leaf might have a great gesture that cost them alot financially.

I think your missing the point of what I'm saying. Nintendo provides a service. It makes them money to pay for resources they need to provide us FREE dlc that we don't necessarily deserve. I mean again it's a cheap service. And again you don't have to buy it. It's just a service to persuade you to play online.

Nintendo fans will defend anything sometimes lol.

people really show their privilege in terms of wealth when it comes to their defence of massively wealthy corporations. profits should never come at the hefty cost of quality and/or user (i.e. the people who give you that money) experience. the only reason it does is corporate greed like idk what about that is so hard to understand but-

Honestly, it's a hard question to answer. On one hand, Nintendo is planning to support ACNH for years to come and we absolutely cannot expect them to do so completely for free. On the other hand, NSO isn't dedicated to supporting ACNH and Nintendo has loads of other online games with equally as bad online as AC. I mean, any Splatoon player can attest to how atrocious Nintendo's online is and continues to be.

I do wonder though if the people complaining about it being locked behind a "paywall" would be okay if this was a batch of paid DLC instead? If you're unhappy giving monetary support to increase ACNH's lifespan via NSO, would you be happy giving monetary support at all or just expect them to continue updating the game completely for free?

The idea here is to keep people playing ACNH for many years, cause I think we all know how quick many players got burnt out on ACNL. And I don't mean those of us who are dedicated fans of the series, but the average player who would have probably already dropped the game entirely without these rolled out updates.

Don't get me wrong, I am glad most of the games I enjoy still have online, but there's no denying that NSO is subpar compared to many other online memberships. It's not going to change with the Switch probably, but I really do wish that Nintendo would start making some dedicated servers to their mainline games like AC and Smash.

Then matches in Smash would last 2 minutes like they were supposed to and not crawl on for 10 minutes. And if you leave it's your fault for not dealing with Nintendo's abysmal system they have in place. I got punished with an hour penalty for leaving a match that was supposed to be like 2 mins and I checked my clock and it was going on 10-15.

Or having a friend that somehow disconnects on purpose or accident or somehow is idling so everyone disconnects in Animal Crossing. I played a game on GC called PSO. It was online and when someone would join your game it would take 5-10 seconds tops. If they dced their name just vanished from your roster and the game continued uninterrupted.

This was a Sega game. Sega in 2000 was doing it better than Nintendo.

I mean did some of you guys forgets that the NSO subscription isn't just for acnh?? It provides other services online like Splatoon 2..

No I didn't because I stated something about Smash in my post above. They never did anything new from what Smash4 did and somehow managed to make changes that were worst.

Like you could play with friends online and add cpu to fight against in Smash4, but that option is not possible in Smash ult. Or two people could play together online but in Ult that isn't possible either. You would need two switches with two separate online accounts.

I completely agree. The fact that you basically have to have it just get different colored furniture really rubs me the wrong way.

Same. There was nothing wrong with having Cyrus refurbish our furniture. And there would be nothing wrong with just letting the Nook's sell every variation. I've played since release day and I've still only got ONE other color of ice cream lamp, for example. (and the random one I got from a tree or a balloon was the same dang color so that didn't even help me) I'm going to get a subscription soon because I'm tired of not having the things I really want to decorate my house and island.
