I tried once with Pierce. It failed miserably. Anyone got a simple guide or explanation on how to do it right?

I can explain if it helps?

1. First of all you have to ask the villager to move in, from a different town.
2. Then you time travel to the day the plot will show up with the rope around.
3. DO NOT open your game with any pre existing characters that day, you have to create a new one.
4. Once you have done that, you should be in your town with a new character.
5. Run around and see where the plot is.
6. If you don't like where it is, press the power button, then the home button, (basically rage quit without saving)
7. If you did step 6 then repeat steps 3-6 over and over till you like it.

If you do like it then do all of the things you need to do to be able to save, then save and quit, delete the character and open your mayors account for the day.

I must've done something wrong that time, I reset with a new character but his plot stayed in the same spot.

Sometimes that happens. Just keep quitting without saving, and making a new character. Till you get a new spot.

yea you might not have done anything wrong! i've gone an hour before with a villager trying to move into the same spot over and over. you have to be persistent. when i know a new villager is gonna be moving in, i go to 5:58am and then quit my main character, make a new one after i know 6am has passed, and just keep creating a new character until the villager is where i want them. i think now you can use paths to help?

Do I go back to normal time after resetting the plot, then back to when the plot appears? Or just set the time to plot day, then just keep deleting and recreating characters?

You just set the time to the day the plot appears and then you don't touch it again unless it's going to go to the next day, or you like the plot and want to tt to the next day after saving ;)

Let me rephrase this confusing stuff.

I go to the plot day, then I load up a new character. If the plot is not where I like it, I close the game. When I reopen, do I create a new character again without changing the time, or do I go back, then forwards again to that day?

Hey again! :) you don't need to change the time after you've closed the game. Just load up again with another new character and repeat the process until the villager is in a spot you like

Just to add to LinkToTheWorld's post, if the game is going to start a new day, then you may put the time back a few hours and continue making a new character.
