Anyone else get like... really overwhelmed when it comes to decorating your island?

Definitely! I often visit dream addresses and look online for inspiration but I always think to myself I will never have an island as beautiful as that. It has encouraged me to terraform as I never used to bother with that. I tend to take my time more now and try and plan layouts.

All the time, yeah. I think one of the major flaws in this game is the lack of items similar to the Public Works Projects in NL. Having a large windmill to decorate around helped provide a theme and a focus for certain areas of the island. In NH, items like the trellis or the lighthouse are still really small compared to shops and houses. There's a lot more empty space compared to previous games, and we didn't get a higher villager limit so everyone is super spread out, but the vast majority of decorative items are small enough to fit in the corner of a living room. Unless you have a very strong sense of design, it's easy to make the island feel cluttered or random, because placing most of the available items takes up almost no space. And it's not very natural-looking to place beds, bookshelves, pillows, etc. outdoors to get rained on. I've noticed that a lot of the more cohesive looking islands rely very heavily on custom designs because most of the items don't look like they "work" in the natural grass/snow setting.

I think they kinda dropped the ball on large outdoor items, to be honest. Even the orderable kiosk items like the carnival equipment and sports gear are not terribly large, they're not interactable (so even with the items things feel devoid of life), and they're so specific that you have to commit to narrow themes for that area in order to use them. NH would really have benefited from some proportionally larger outdoor items in a much wider variety of styles, especially if they could be used by the player and the villagers even just in one little animation, like Pocket Camp.
