Anyone else felt that their 5-star-rating was unwarranted?

On my morning rounds I came across a lily of the valley and wondered: How did that get there? Then I remembered that I had picked up around twenty fossils that had been cluttering the ground yesterday. So I went over to Isabelle and indeed - I got the five star rating.
After reading on this forum how people are often struggling to get up to five stars and watching youtube videos touring beautiful islands, I thought this was something to really work towards and I was looking forward to the challenge. It was supposed to be like a great milestone of my deserted island life! Now there is no challenge and this doesn't feel like a milestone. It was more an "o, okay"-moment than a moment of joy. The thing is, my island is a mess. Sure, I've been having some good ideas and here and there they start showing, but nothing is even close to how I want it be. Of course in this game the island will probably never be truly finished, but I thought that it would be at least somewhat pretty before I get the five star rating so there woud be the feeling of having accomplished something. I don't know, I guess I'm just little disappointed.
Did anyone else feel that way when they got their five star rating?

Yeah it seems that just having a lot of flowers, furniture, and fencing can really boost up your rating. I got 5 stars a little faster then I thought I would too because of it.

It does feel a little underwhelming, but your island is never really complete even with 5 stars as I find new things I want to change on my island almost everyday lol.

Definitely. I've only finished about 20% of my island and everything else is empty or a flowery kerfuffle yet I was shocked to learn I hit 5-stars. Not complaining about it though because the part of the island I have designed is extremely detailed, but I certainly didn't expect it. I also really wanted the lily of the valleys as part of my cliffside design but I haven't had much luck spawning them on my own and had to resort to buying a few from someone here...

They probably could have made it more difficult to achieve 5-stars, but some people also prefer not to make their islands super detailed and prefer a more natural, open landscape and maybe that would make it impossible or really challenging for some, if they made the requirements greater.

The game just wants to dictate how many items and plants you have to have. You either roll with it and hope/happen to build an island that fits the requirements, or you take advantage of the mechanics just to get the recipe.

Honestly, while I get that they want to give you an incentive to decorate your island, crap like x amount of items per y amount of fields or no more than so many trees is unnecessary micromanaging that defies the entire advertised point of making your island your own.

So yeah, my rating was unwarranted, but if they tell me a big forest makes my island bad their opinion on what's good enough is invalid and I don't care.

Kind of!! I hit 5 star around the same time as my friends, who had beautiful gorgeous towns and I had uh.... my quirky little trash town (it's still that way). I think I hit the 5 stars because I decided to hide a heck ton of decoy ducks around my town, and then decided one corner of my town needed to be turned into a bamboo tiger forest with like 40 paper tigers. So... I think that must have helped.

I got 5 star just by intensively decorating 1/5 of my island...didnt expect that but I kinda feel like I'm gonna lose it bc I want lots of trees sooo

I dumped a bunch of random furniture outside the plaza, picked up all my mats/trash lying around to get the 5 star rating so I could collect some jacobs ladders to decorate my house LOL

definitely an unwarranted 5 star rating for me

Lol, I'm still at 3 stars 🤡 My guess is because of the diys I have on the ground, but even then I probablyhave no more than4 stars

I got five star when my town was overrun with flowers and useless furniture and I was in the middle of terraforming. I didn't expect to get 5 star when my island looked like trash after finding a jacobs ladder.

god i feel that ndnsksks i got my 5 star after i picked up a bunch of diys i had dropped onto stools which was apparently affecting my rating but yeah im no where near "done"

I was pretty surprised when I got five stars. I wasn't disappointed, but I didn't expect it. I had barely decorated a fourth of my island when I got curious and checked my rating. I feel like the challenge for me now is keeping the rating as I decorate the rest of my island. I know you can lose the 5 star rating, but I'm not sure what all impacts it. If I finish decorating my island and I love how it looks but I only have 4 stars, I think I'd be okay with that.

definitely! i got my 5 star rating after cleaning up my island from all the items and diys i randomly dropped everywhere. i didn't expect to get 5 stars yet, definitely not when i didn't even decorate half of my island properly. all i really wanted to know from isabelle was if i had too many trees and she suddenly congratulates me on having 5 stars. ;-;

Those YouTube yours would be more accurate to show the amount of hours put in. As you found out, getting a 5 star island isn't hard if you are just planting flowers, fences, and furniture anywhere.

Thank you all for replying! I feel a little better now that I know I wasn't the only one who felt like they got their rating out of the blue. I guess what I realized is that I don't really like my island, so my next project will be island-makeover :giggle:

That's exactly what happened to me! It really makes me feel better to know I wasn't the only one having a random little flower thrown right into their dirty construction site 😆

I got 5 stars even when I had only decorated the entrance to the island, the golden 5 star yelp review is a joke.
Same! Although as of today I don't like my entrance anymore plus it was lacking purple roses. It just seems so weird to have one more or less good looking area while everything else is trash and the tourits (if there are tourists, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just Tom) are all like: "Best place ever!!!"

4-star club unite lol

i havent even come close to 5-stars yet. i've been playing since release and TT a fair amount

So I guess it just comes down to if your tastes by any chance happen to come close to Isabelle's.
Who knows, maybe she won't even like my island anymore once I do 😆
If you're going for the rating, best of luck and if not, I hope you enjoy your island the way you like it :giggle:

I think a few items can really make a difference. I have a lighthouse, a snack machine, a drink machine, a fountain and a monster statue all from the Nook Stop, I suspect these things really contributed a lot to my rating. As for items on the ground, like I said, the moment I picked up my twenty fossils, five stars. I still have clutter lying around, though.

Boring feedback from me, but your island's biggest critic will no doubt be yourself. It can be good or bad but as long as you're enjoying the never ending building of the island, then all is well.
