When I first got the game I hit my starters like crazy because I wanted them to leave. I also felt really bad about it and just started being nice to them instead (even though they were all huge eyesores).

I don't understand people hitting villagers. I have the red hammer from the island, but have never used it because I know it would make them sad!

I haven't had the heart to hit villagers since ACGC!
Lol I remember making Chow sad when I was a kid and literally haven't done it in any game since. It scarred me, lol

I don't like to hit my villagers even though I hate some of them. I just can't bring myself to do that to them because it's too mean. I don't think hitting them makes them move faster though. I think it actually slows the moving process down.
