For me, it's mostly puns related to a villager's species that I just don't figure out until too late... Two examples that come to mind are Ken and Moose.
Regarding Ken, I always assumed that he was given a generic Japanese name to fit in with his theme. But it was only when I visited my friend's dream address, met Ken, and seen his name written out that I'd realized the truth. That's right... chicKEN. I've been making fun of myself daily ever since, because how could I have NOT noticed?
And Moose? He's one letter off from mouse.
How did I not know these things? Lmao. What about you guys? Any (obvious) puns you recently discovered?
I feel like I deserve to be laughed at for this but...
Tia the tea-pot elephant. I only about a month ago realized it's supposed to be pronounced TEA and is very obviously a play on that since she is a walking tea-pot.
I only realized the other day that pietro might have been named pietro because he's a clown and like... Pie Throw? Is that what they were going for? I feel like the "pie" part was definitely intentional at least
Hippeux is a French inspire spelling of hippo. I don't know about anything about the language but the wiki says that if you follow the rules of the language his name is pronounced [i.pø]
Like I known about this villager for a while but it wasn't until I met him on a mystery island that I understood his name.
Let’s see... Drake is a male mallard duck. Makes sense. Rilla is short for “gorilla”. It just all makes sense to me... until I realized that Pate is literally food made from duck or goose liver.
I heard someone say Marshal was play on Marshmallow and idk if that's true but I literally never would have thought of that. Also I just recently got Carrie = carry. Bc she has the joey.
Also, shoutout to the dude whose favorite villager is Elmer but hasn't yet figured out that he's named after a glue... that was at some point made with horses...
