What I do when I'm about to die is spam A and move the analog-thing around really quickly, it normally gets a couple, and you'll also notice some more matches when you do this too

If possible.. Use an amiibo figure! I tried without and did terrible. Lol. I was stuck at the first villager (after dealing with Tortimer..) and then I tried with an amiibo and did soo much better ~

I already use them, but non of mine (Isabelle, K.K., Mabel, Cyrus, Reese, Lottie, Digby) seem to be very effective in story mode.

Well.. Personally Digby helped me alot. Helped me with the first villager, the second and for me - Redd. It took some re-tries though

Focus on putting together combos (matching 4 or more panels at once) and chains (after you clear panels, having the blocks that fall cause more panels to match and disappear). Combos and chains raise your approval rating faster. Try to keep the top even by dropping panels from tall stacks. Save the horizontal clear for when you really need it since it stops panels from rising for a couple seconds. If you are doing a garbage block round, get rid of them as fast as possible.
