So I came across this this morning and it was kind of a disappointing article. I've seen several complaints about this game since launch. I personally think that it hasn't been given enough of a chance yet, especially with all of these possibilities of new content coming and characters dropping little hints in the dialogue about more buildings etc. I am really excited about the cafe and gyroids possibly making a return and look forward to collecting them again. And I also saw something on Twitter about some dialogue mentioning Kapp'n. I miss him so much:) Anyway, what are your opinions on NH so far? Does it tend to be more boring than the previous games? About the same? Or better for you?

to me it's better, and also extremely hard to compare because of the context of the time we're in. people are burning out quickly bc of self isolation due to corona and sinking months worth of play time into two weeks (not a smear on anyone, i myself have 185 hours already) so we're burning through content a lot quicker than i think we were even meant to.

if i were to imagine playing this game in a normal time, i wouldn't be experiencing even the slightest bit of burn out. there's so much to do in this game as far as island customization, collecting, bell earning, getting to know your villagers for more dialogue, etc. to me NH keeps the play style and appeal of all the earlier games, with much more to do and just the right amount of personality that makes all the other games so charming. im just trying to take it as slowly as possible considering the situation i and we all are in, and wait patiently for more events and updates (ex: super excited ab the fishing tourney today!)

I feel like New Horizons is progressing a tiny bit slower then say New Leaf, but honestly that’s to be expected since we’re building the island from the ground up.
Personally I think most of the progression is fine and doesn’t take too long, but I’m also a huge fan of how laidback the game is.
It’s nice that you progress day by day and it really makes you feel accomplished when you do something ‘small’.
I feel like a lot of updates will really add a ton more things to do, and that most of the people complain about the game being too slow are people that are use to binge playing a game and beating it within a few days or so.. which obviously they can’t do with Animal Crossing

Im actually really enjoying the game as it is now. The new things that have been brought in bring in a ton of possibilities to decorating the island. Is it a shame that some of the older things aren't in the game? Yes, without a doubt. I miss Reese, Cyrus, the police dogs, Resetti, but sometimes things change and have to be retired. In its place, we've gotten new things that we would've never imagined. And I believe that Nintendo even listened to what players wanted by introducing the ability to move buildings and build villager houses.

I personally think that a lot of the negativity around the game is due to nostalgia. New Leaf had our hearts for years. That combined with the fact that we all had our own idea of what New Horizons was meant to be, I think that some people are finding it hard to let go. I also think the fact that the online economy of the game has gone crazy is not helping. For players like me who prefer to take things day by day and to do things on their own, it hasn't had much of an affect. But its very clear in the posts on this forum that the economy is ruining the game for some people.

But yeah, my friends and family are all loving the game and I'm genuinely looking forward to what Nintendo will bring in the future with future updates. If they go down the right path, they'll bring in the things that its players/community wants as well as introduce new things.

i feel like i've found myself in a bit of a slump lately, especially since i haven't been using the nook mile island feature much and i've always ignored the stalk market, but then i realised i can terraform! but it's so difficult to start doing because i don't know how i want my island to look yet and cba to keep moving all my facilities. but generally, i've had a really positive experience, no better or worse than my enjoyment of new leaf. like @meggtheegg said, the current climate is very unprecedented and i think a lot of people's burnout is due to having so much more time to dedicate to the game, and i don't think animal crossing always lends itself to be a game that can be played for an entire day when its pace is so slow and centred around real time. i think new horizons has improved on a lot, but those positive changes have also come at the expense of some cool older features. like many, i really hope in the future they add the roost, art, katrina etc, but i'm not going to let my enjoyment of the game rely on the potential of them returning. though i am optimistic since i think new horizons was designed to evolve over time, and i'm excited even if upcoming developments are things we haven't seen before.

That's also a really good point. I actually said to my housemate last week that all of the hate for the Easter event wouldn't be happening if people were working all day long. The sheer amount of eggs wouldn't feel like so much if you could only spend a little bit of time a day to get the eggs.

i also relate to this, because to me animal crossing is this very pure, wholesome escape from reality, but it's difficult to feel that way when the online community feels so divided and the economy is so heavily inflated. i think people are finding it hard to find their feet, particularly as the later economy of new leaf was very tame, and i understand why people think the economy is very exploitative and competitive. i'm sure this was the same for new leaf at release, though, so it's not going to be an issue forever, but this is the first time i've experienced an animal crossing game here as it's released, so it feels somewhat like new territory for me.

Its okay not to like the game and its not for everyone. But it is not game that is one and done or know the whole game in the short term. It just not hows it laid out and that seems frustrating to people. Like mention above you can get burned out on it if you play so much in a short amount on time even if love the series.

I thought the article was hilarious, personally.

Three weeks of daily play and I'm still enjoying it!

I have more complaints about New Horizons than I did for New Leaf (for which I have none. New Leaf is the perfect Animal Crossing game)

Mainly I'm disappointed in all of the bugs that we currently have. And while a lot of the missing features, NPCs, and items could get added in future patches, it doesn't change the fact that we don't have irrefutable proof of when they'll be added or even if they'll be added at all.

By now we would have already unlocked... The Dream Suite... Kicks... Club LOL... Garden Shop... etc in New Leaf. Instead we don't really have much of anything to look forward to in New Horizons (aside from a shop upgrade that really isn't all that impressive) I would be more forgiving if not for the game breaking bugs.

Complaints aside, I'm still loving the game and I haven't given up hope that some of these features will eventually return. I've been having more fun with Animal Crossing than I have in years. New Leaf is still my favorite game in the series, but after 7 years of running the same town it just doesn't make me as excited.

I personally enjoy it so far and I do agree with everyone else that I think people are burning themselves out with the game due to the pandemic.

I’m kinda up for them taking a new approach and not making another NL clone tbh. NH feels like it’s doing it’s own thing so it’s kinda refreshing to see something new. Then again, the game isn’t complete yet and there’s still updates to be added so I’m not sure about the future of this game.

Also Animal Crossing is one of those games that aren’t going to appeal to everyone, so I can understand why some people wouldn’t enjoy it, however, I think the article you linked is satire/very sarcastic.

There is an excessive amount of busy work in the game which is an unforced error by Nintendo, but otherwise the game is pretty good. I also wished they invested more time in villager dialogue because you'd think it's one of the easiest things to work on. It's cool that the villagers do all kinds of activities around your town, but they don't have good dialogue relating to those activities which makes them less interesting. There are more things you can do in NH than in NL due to being able to place furniture outside and terraform, but it's a double-edged sword in that it's a lot easier to build things and design your town than in NL, so it's a lot easier to "finish" your town quickly and get bored with the game. NH provides enough entertainment for now, but it will need additional DLC to give it the lifespan that NL had.

Not only are people spending more time on it than they might normally thanks to the quarantine, but a lot more people are getting into AC for the first time with NH. I personally believe AC isn't for everyone. It's not a fast-paced action game, nor is it a game with some rich, compelling plotline.

I personally am enjoying this game a lot. I'm enjoying it even more than I did NL. The progression is a little slower than NL, but not much. I think some people forget how long it takes to unlock things in NL if you don't TT. I do, however, think that Nintendo absolutely needs to keep supporting this game with updates. Frankly, they intentionally did not put everything into the game on purpose so they can roll it out via updates. That's fine... but that means they need to keep supporting it with new updates, preferably at least once a month, for at least 1 whole year. If they ever stop for whatever reason, that will hurt the game badly.

Honestly I feel like a vast majority of criticism has come from people who got introduced to the series in NL and liked the more fast-paced feeling of it.

Personally I find that this game is vastly superior to NL. Our culture has become way too focused on instant gratification, and Animal Crossing is a welcome change of pace. I respect Nintendo even more for not stooping to the lowest common denominator and being honest with what Animal Crossing is about. It's not for everyone, and that's what makes it a great game.

I’m very bored with it at the moment to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, every AC game I’ve played has had its boring, grinding moments. Unlocking the golden watering can in WW, unlocking PWPs in New Leaf. But most of New Horizons is boring and a grind at the moment.

Take todays fishing tourney. You’ve got 3mins to catch as many fish as you can, though you’re aiming for 10. To even get anywhere close to this goal, you’re going to need bait. So first you’ve got to hunt down and dig out 10 Manila calms. Then you have to individually craft 10 packets of fish bait before you can even attempt the tourney.

Hurray! You caught 10 fish! Brilliant, that nets you 12points. You can exchange them for ONE reward. But wait, there’s 17 rewards in total up for grabs. 0.0

You guessed it. That means you’re gonna have to dig up least 170 Manila clams and make at least 170 packets of bait. And that’s all without taking into account that your fishing rod and shovel will break every 5mins just to keep things interesting!

And that’s just the issues with the fishing tourney. Let’s look at the Sakura event. I grinded for 4 hours a day for five days for Sakura recipes and I have 3 show for it.

Everything in this game is time consuming and awkward. And it shouldn’t be. Especially when you consider that there is practically nothing to other than fish and bug catch. And players don’t even want to do that cause their tools keep bloody breaking!

I restarted my town twice and even that didnt make me bored of the game, that is how much it got me hooked!
Only thing i find a little boring is the multiplayer. Bring back mini games, please!

Personally i've been enjoying it a lot!! I think a bunch of people are just rushing through a lot of the stuff in it cause we all have a bunch of free time, so it's way easier to get burnout right now :[
I've been purposefully trying to not do a bunch of stuff at once in a day and take my time with decorating and organizing everything..its a lot more chill and ive had a lot of fun with it even if it does take a little longer to get to the same level of progress as everyone else

You dont have to get all 10 at once tho? It's p easy to get 5-6 in one go without any bait, even if it does end up costing some more bells than if you used bait.

Oh my goodness that article was hilarious! I actually really enjoyed reading it. You realize that article was written as a comedy piece and it wasn't actually someone complaining about how boring the game was, right? ^__^

And I'm not bored with the game at all! I'm still managing to keep very busy so far~ It's been a whole lot of fun.
