I have never reset I still have my town from 2013 I just over time if wanted a fresh start got another cart town. I do feel bad for not keeping all my original animals in that town but I can't undo that can only finish getting dreams and then use my spare cart either to cycle but not sure is for me or do my quest at a no interference town once dreams are achieved in others. But no I've never reset any just over the years been gifted or got extra carts in case.
You're certainly not the only one! Despite all the villager's I've hated, all the ones who have moved out, all the ones that ruined my layout, I still have my town! 
Going strong since about August 2013?? Sounds about right! 
I've just learned to love my villagers as of now, and I still have a lot of stuff to do since I've taken many breaks. Just knw you're nop alone!

There are people who don't reset or TT. I was one of them...until I lost my game cartridge. Will forever miss my old town 
I worked really hard, and everything was genuine. Since I restarted, I have time-traveled just to get somewhat closer to where I was before.

I've had my town, Zijkant, ever since the 16th of June, 2013. I bought it 2 days after it's release, and I've never TT'd or reset my town.
Over the two years that I've owned the game, I've had massive periods that I didn't play at all, as in, didn't touch the game for months. I've nearly got my entire encyclopedia complete, my town is filled with flowers and cute paths, my villagers live on the best spots possible (and my most favorite hasn't left, he moved in on June 17th, 2013) and I've gotten a lot of badges.
There is so much progress in my town, I could never bear to reset it. And I refuse to TT, since it might heck things up. I'm fine with how it is, and just go with the flow, even if that means losing villagers after a few months of not playing. That's how it's supposed to work, I guess, just like real life.

Duckburg's never been reset, going strong since 6/2013.
Sylvania hasn't yet, either, but is newer. I can't say if won't reset it down the road, though.

I'd rather buy another copy than reset..., hence the four towns
