that sometimes, villagers ask you for something in your pockets in exchange for some bells, they name a price, and when they hand it to you, it's a different amount of bells? I usually noticed this from Kid Cat.

umm, let's see, here's some example dialogue. it goes along the lines of:
"Hey, ____! I noticed your _______ there and I was looking for the exact same thing! Can I pay you 98 bells for it?"
*clicks yes*
"Oh, great! Here's your 108 bells!"
