Ah, the garden shop is finally selling the sapling I've been wanting to buy!

Today I bought a cedar tree sapling from the garden shop per usual, and when I went to my orchard and dug a hole, the tree planted itself in the tile next to the hold I'd dug. What? I'm really confused as I've planted normal trees many times before and this hasn't ever happened to me. o_o what went wrong? Did I do something wrong? My S.O. told me that I don't even need to dig holes when planting normal trees... is this true? I usually dig the hole to ensure the tree ends up where I want it to. And then he said I would have had an option to "bury," or "plant," but I tested this hypothesis and it was incorrect... so, erm... why did this happen?

Were you holding a shovel when you planted the tree? Holding a shovel prompts the "bury" option, otherwise it's "plant" instead.

I totally was! Look at my test photo, even--

My inventory shows my character holding a shovel. o-o

EDIT: the photo doesn't show it, but I was indeed near a freshly dug hole when I took it.

I don't even think that tree can grow that close to the cliff. I wouldn't worry about it.

There's spaces surrounding the tile where I wish to plant the tree, so I figured I'd be in the clear. :/ is it happening because it's too close to the cliff, perhaps? grr, my orchard will look lopsided without a cedar tree there. :(

Until you see the cedar trees on either sides of my orchards :p oh well, I might end up digging up my perfect orange tree and shifting all the trees over one spot so I can edge both sides of that stretch of orchard with a cedar since the perfect trees die after so many harvests, anyway.

Thanks for replying, everyone.

I used to think you can only plant without the digging, then yesterday I finally got the answer. You need to face the hole and hold your shover, and click bury =x

I did that and the option to bury wasn't listed. I even tried to test it out in a random spot in my town a few times, facing the hole and holding a shovel; still no option to bury. I did have "plant," which tossed the sapling into the hole, but I could have swore when I plated trees previously I'd always had the option to "bury."
