To me, the City isn't dead but some shops may be run by different animals. The towns wouldn't have railways, but others would.

How about you?

The rain gave everyone hypothermia, and they all died.
Gracie, Lyle, Dr. Shrunk, Redd, Mr. Resetti, Harriet, and the Iguana comedian survived, though.

All the Villagers from gamecube occupied the city, as they wandered with no homes to go
Wisp occupied at night

Each game in the series takes place in an alternate universe. It lives on like normal in CF, and the events that take place there won't affect what happens in NL, WW, or PG :)

This might also explain how the male villager grew hair and ears in Wild World.

He didn't necessarily grow hair, and the male player's ears are given this compliment by Resetti:

"Scrub behind those ears! You got POTATOES back there!"

Everyone hid underground in Resetti's hideout when a bomb hit the city.
Radiation make characters taller.
The cast dug through burrows underground, and climbed out into New Leaf, where the hamster, deer and new villagers were living.

If you wear a horned cap in Wild World, City Folk, or New Leaf, you can see the player's hair and ears peeking from the bottom of the hat. None of that is present in Animal Forest, Animal Crossing, or Animal Crossing e+. Oh, yeah, and about the girl. She just decided to take her hat off.
