I’ve been looking into adding more villagers to my island I know there’s a way of doing this by adding more switch profiles but I’m wondering if there’s any benefit to it.

I thought it was on the storage and having the island look more populated with houses.

What happens with the villager you’re not playing? And does the current villager have access to every house?

In addition to storage and decoration, extra characters also allow you to get more of certain items. They'll get their own message bottle DIY per day, they can receive extra copies of DIYs from crafting villagers if you want to give them away/trade them. They have their own commission slot when C.J./Flick visits, so you can collect their models faster. They can receive their own item from Gulliver/Gullivarrr. If Redd is selling multiple pieces of art that you want, the extra character can buy that. With the new update, they can also see Pascal for an additional trade with him every day. And so on and so forth. A small thing they can do is if you tell a villager to move, and it ends up either being an accident or you end up regretting it, extra characters can ask that villager to stay.

When you're not playing as the extra character/not using co-op mode, they just don't exist. Only the player who owns a house can access it's storage and decorated items.

Sounds like something I definitely want to consider.

I assume which each house you have to start with square one with the loans

Yep. They also have a modified tutorial sequence as they unlock tools and whatnot, so I'd recommend giving the extra characters things like Bells, materials, anything they might need to complete the first loan which requires you to earn Nook Miles, etc. so that it goes by faster. You can use the co-op mode to give items between players instead of exiting out of a character and going back in with the other character.

Do you need more than one switch to play co-op?

For co-op between different characters on the same island, you just need multiple controllers (if you have Joy-Cons, you can use both Joy-Cons as separate controllers). Once you have multiple characters, all characters get access to an app that initiates the co-op mode, and whenever you use it, the game gives you a prompt to sync the controllers you use as the mode starts; it's pretty straightforward, I think.

I have a question about this- Can every player decorate the outside of the island? If Player 1 put a wooden chair outside their house, could Player 2 pick the chair up and move it to the beach? What if Player 1 placed a tarantula outside on a table, could Player 2 pick it up and immediately add it to their encyclopedia?

That is a good question.

I did notice I could pick up items when I had to put my tent down. And when I tried to donate to blathers I could not donate let my first character already did

Yes I added my first additional character! Guinevere! (You can see where this theme is going)

If you still need an answer, all characters can decorate outside of the island. Any item that gets placed can get picked up by any player. This is notably the only way of "trading" fish/bugs/sea creatures between players.

To answer another one of your questions, yes, you can go into the other characters houses without them being there. The only thing is that you won't be able to access their storage or pickup/remove/move items in their houses.

I had to take out all my umbrellas out of my main account and drop them off in front of my second characters house, I saved the game, logged out and then logged back in with the other account... so it's a bit of a hassle, especially when trading... but I do appreciate the extra storage!

Benefits
- More Mom's Items (she sends them letter's too)
- More Player Birthday opportunities w/ villagers
- They get their own Message in a Bottle on the beach
- They can go get the DIYs from villagers, too.
--- Which they could always give to the main to sell/trade later instead of learning
- More Storage
- Option to design another house/more rooms
--- Since rugs and wall items can't be used outside this is nice...
- Extra Runs on NPCs
--- Flick/CJ models
--- Gulliver items
--- Can buy extra art from Redd
--- Pascal & Celeste recipe visits
- NookMiles SUPER easy to get early game so can get NMT very quickly
- Order 5 more items a day from Nook Shopping
--- Granted, they need to have catalogged it, but if you need lots of books or magazines for example!!

Also, alt characters start out with the ability to terraform if that is already unlocked on the island. They will need to get Nook Miles for the upgrades for it... but it is nice if you are running around on an alt and want to change something real quick you don't HAVE to switch to the main resident.

Alt character profiles don't have to be linked to a nintendo account either, btw. So you don't have to go through the process of making them a nintendo account with e-mail & password. Unless of course you want to put them on your "Nintendo Switch Online Family Plan" for them to be able to visit other items or your friends visit you while you are on your alt.
