Not sure if I have a problem or not so thought I would come to the experts. Both my wife and I have had AC for about a year now, and we got Nintendo Online about the same time. Last night I was looking thru my cloud backups and all of my games were backed up but AC was nowhere to be found. I looked at my wifes switch and hers was the same. Does this mean that we do not have a backup in case something happens and if not why is the backup not being done? I thought it was automatic if you had Nintendo Online. Thank you all very much in advance.

I'm pretty sure you actually have to enable it in the game setttings. On the title screen hit minus and Tom Nook should talk about an option for enabling backups or some other online service.
ACNH has it's own cloud save system. It doesn't work the way other Switch games do. You must enable them by speaking to Tom Nook on the title screen.
Restoring your saves is also it's own method, unlike traditional Switch cloud saves. It requires starting the game on a Switch with no current save, and speaking to a Nintendo rep to enable your save for restoration.
I went to Tom Nook at the start and his options are SAVE DATA and ISLAND BACKUP and a couple of other misc ones. Which should I choose? Also once this is setup, is it automatic or do I need to occasionally do something to keep it up to date? Thanks again.
I believe it is Island Blackup and it is automatic. Every day you load the game, it will update automatically.
