im not quite sure if theres any upgrade mechanics to the houses like there is for our avatars...is there something like that?

Nope. You can gift them furniture and they might put it up, but that is it so far.

I've seen quite a few people wish for them to add a HHD-like mechanic to let us redesign villager houses... And while I do find it cute to see them find dumb placements for the stuff you give them, it would be nice to be able to do that
