A couple of parts of my island are straight up copies of ideas I got from videos, instagram, etc.

I don't post those parts of my island anywhere and would never claim them as my own, but I'm a little worried about my dream address. Does anybody think this would be a problem, with possible "retribution" online? (not that I expect a ton of visitors to my island. ha!) I'm not even sure I remember where I got some of them. Should I try to find that info and give great credit if I post my DA anywhere (like here)?

Nobody "owns" furniture or stylish placements from ACNH. You're good. It's normal to get inspired by people creatively through any medium. There's no real way for people to get mad and take revenge on you either for a AC island. It would be nice to credit them on social media, but your dream could get reported and taken down for social media references

I think that would be fine, but if I were you, I'll try to reach out and give credit to those people before posting your DA. If you're shy to approach, maybe, just give a "like" or something similar to that? I'm sure they would appreciate your gesture a lot. That is, if you remember them and if they are accessible. But if not, just try to give credit in your own way.

i think "copying" people's ideas in this game is harmless (it's just a game not a business idea or something like that lol), but it'd be polite to credit people when posting your DA - it's, like, a nod to the community and very appreciated. also, i'm sure most of us who play online have been inspired by other people, it's kinda hard not to be. from what i've seen, ideas we incorporate into our islands tend to be gradually adapted to each person's gameplay and aesthetic/style. to me that's also the most "honest" (couldn't find a better word) way to take someone else's ideas. but again: acnh is just a game!!!

It’s highly unlikely that the ideas you “took” were unique in the first place, so I really wouldn’t worry about originality in that respect. If you literally copied every single aspect of someone else’s island - items, placement, etc- and then posted pics on social media, giving explicit credit to your inspo would be the decent thing to do.

i was gonna say this too. i saw a twitter video recently of an island that i thought i saw from a youtube tour video, but turns out they were different islands. it was a bit identical! now i see they did credit who the idea came from. so i just think that in this game, it’s pretty common for people to get inspired.

most of the screenshots we see online, they were most probably inspired by others in some way too. it just gets problematic when someone claims it’s their idea, but rarely does this happen because they will get called out.

I think it also depends on what the area is. We only have so much furniture so of course lots of things are gonna be the same. Like if you saw a cafe or a bonfire with logs around it, and copied that, nobody's gonna bat an eye. The objects were MADE for that kind of thing.

Something more creative, yes, that could be... Different. Again depends on what exactly it is and just how creative that person is using the furniture.

It's probably not nice to say or assume that the people who TC visited or took inspiration with doesnt have anything unique in their work. We are not in the position to judge that because we have not seen them.

Just give credit. It's not hard to give credit. You'll not die if you do it.

BTW, I salute and admire the TC for admitting it.

Exactly. I’ve been modding Bethesda games for almost 20 years and I have lost track of how many houses, dungeons, and landscape mods I’ve seen that look a lot like each other, and I mean a lot. There must be hundreds of Riverwood starter cabins for Skyrim, each with basements stuffed with mannequins and shrines. Limited assets make that largely inevitable. And of course some ideas, like campsites, orchards etc are going to look similar the majority of the time because so many of their reference points are shared and we’re an imitative species in the first place.

I think you should rearrange things. I can't tell you how many waterfalls, café, outdoor libraries, diners, parks, and a bunch of other ideas that have been used. Especially specific custom patterns, as well as secret islands, outdoor paintings near a lighthouse, etc. When it comes down to it, this game is rather limited in the creativity department. I don't think people are going to recognize certain sections that you claim to have copied from other islands, unless what you copied is a large section from what you saw on a different island.
