After Wisp possesses a villager it'll give you some dialogue and you can ask for a gift from the villager or ask them to move in.
If you scan an NPC's card you can ask for a gift
If you scan an actual amiibo figure you can ask them to come and play and they will then visit your campsite
Wisp can possess the same character/villager multiple times, but you can only summon Wisp once per day per town. So you couldn't log back onto a secondary character and summon him again. One and done a day.
As far as plot resetting goes I haven't dabbled that much into it to have good tips. Just that ALWAYS double check and make sure you're logged into your alt's characters. There's been plenty of times that i've logged on to see where a villager has plotted only to find out i accidently logged in as the mayor and then the villager was stuck where they plotted mostly in horrible places
so alwys make sure you're in the alt's character!
