Hi all, I'm thinking of trading in my 3DS and a couple of games for a 3DS XL and paying the difference. My question is - has anyone done this? Did it improve your overall gaming experience, by having a bigger screen? Would you say that it is worth it? I almost exclusively play Animal Crossing buy may invest in some more games if I get a bigger system.

Thanks for any thoughts :)

Yes, it's worth it. The XL is much more comfortable to hold, and the bigger screens are amazing.

Yes, that is what I imagined. I think I will see how much it costs to upgrade. I would like the Animal Crossing 3DS XL which means it'll come preloaded with AC... so I can trade in my version to bump up the price a bit!
How did you get everything from your old 3DS to the XL?
I could be wrong but I assume that you're talking about downloaded software? If so, would you not just sign in on the new DS and redownload? Your friends can't be transferred I don't think though.

Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn't tie downloads to a single account. It's a hardware thing, so if I were to trade in my normal 3DS for an XL, I wouldn't have all my downloads. (Pretty sure, unless that's changed dramatically). That's why I was wondering how to move all my downloaded software to the new XL.

There's a system transfer function under Settings which allows you to bring over your downloaded games, apps, and save files from the old system into the new. Here's a full list of what's transferred. You need to have both systems on hand to do this, though.

Be careful! A word of warning, I have heard around that if you transfer your backed up data of AC to a new SD card it will not work on the new system..... You might just have to keep your old SD card.

Ah yes I just realized that if I trade in my 3DS with animal crossing for the bundled edition i'll loose my game. I did actually restart my town again a couple of days ago so its not THAT bad I suppose. Ill just go for whichever is the better deal I think. Still looking for opinions of anyone else who has upgraded from a 3DS to XL?

For games like Animal Crossing I'd recommend playing it on a 3DS XL. The graphics suit this size perfectly. Do screenshots come out larger on the 3DS XL? I seem to recall they do.

Where would you even find the ACNL edition 3DS XL? They sold out back in June when the game was released, and they're selling on eBay now for /way/ more than retail price (around double, if I recall correctly). You're probably better of getting a normal 3DS XL (red/black, blue/black, black or white/pink) since those are the "normal" colours and therefore can be easily found in stores for a sane price.

I don't think the screenshots turn out bigger even if you take them on the 3DS XL because the resolution on the regular 3DS and 3DS XL are the exact same, just stretched.

Once the system transfer is complete, you should be able to copy and paste exactly what was on the old card onto the new one if you'd like to upgrade card size. When I system transferred, I moved up to a 16Gb card from a 4Gb and my saves worked just fine. I had no full games on it though (only Colours 3D at the time), but I know others who have done this with games such as Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter etc, even those on the Ambassador programme had no issues. Someone on here must have done this with AC to confirm though.

If not, a quick google will give you all the instructions, I found a fab site with SD card transfer info, I'd have to look it out as this was months ago now.

Nope that doesn't work with Animal Crossing. Nintendo had this BRILLANT idea to not let people back up their Animal Crossing data. It's to prevent cheating but wow is that dumb. Anyway there is a way to get around it though.

Here it is.

I just got a new 3dsxL yesterday along with a free copy of ACNL.

It's much more comfortable to hold, even if you have small hands like me, you won't have to bend any of your fingers or anything. The 3d is improved but I never use 3d :P
Also the pen is much more easier instead to grabbing It from the back then expanding it.

Warning:
Because there are the same pixels on the 3ds and the xL the quality won't look so good but it's worth it, I've gotten over the quality so easily. It isn't really bad.

My partner has the 3DS XL and I have the regular 3DS. Whenever I use his XL for ACNL it's a very different experience. With the regular 3DS it's like looking through a small window. With the XL it's like I opened the door and am walking around in my town. Add to the fact the bigger 3DS xl is more comfortable to hold.

Disclaimer: I've got the Red Pokemon X/Y 3DS XL on preorder

Thanks everyone. I think I probably will trade this in and get a bigger one. I find the normal 3DS very small. I might also buy some more games too, looking at Harvest Moon which I've never tried, Pokemon perhaps. Thank you all c:

My biggest concern with the XL is how I'm going to take it with me anywhere.... I mean it's huge... I can't think of which pocket it'd fit in.

My biggest concern with trading my 3ds for the XL is the much crappier sound quality/volume. I have kids, and its always SO LOUD in my house and I was using my friend's 3DXL and I couldnt hear ANYTHING with it turned all the way up, but I could hear her playing mine on the other end of the couch... so yeah, thats something to take into consideration as well.

TL;DR sound on Xl sucks, invest in a good pair of headphones.

Compared my old 3DS with my new XL and I'm hearing much of a sound difference, but it does sound like the small 3DS has the advantage slightly. Either way unless you're going places or playing in a noisy environment it probably will not matter much.

Ahh thanks for the input everyone. I do usually play with headphones anyway, either that or the volume isn't loud anyway. Im going to go into a local store and see what kind of deals they can do me. Im also trading in MK7 so YAY more money towards an XL c:
