it turns out when you buy on eBay or Amazon, it's illegal to ship Japanese lithium batteries on those sites, and all the 3DS's say that but i didn't pay close enough attention ... but it's all good! i ordered an American one for $8 until then, I'm using the one from my old 3DS which I'm trying to sell

That must only be if your 3DS is being shipped from Japan. I bought a previously imported 3DS from someone who brought it to the U.S. after visiting Japan. Everything works fine on it.

I will however be getting the NA version when it comes out next year. I was hoping to build a friends list beforehand just to be sure that I have some people to play with after release. Do you know if the two versions (Jap and NA) will be compatible?

I'm pretty sure they aren't compatible, therefore everyone's codes on this thread will be irrelevant to your NA 3DS :/

Personally, I think that both versions can play with each other, at least in online. Sure, the Japanese version obviously contained its native language, but that doesn't mean that you can't trade items between foreign region towns. Remember, items are usually identified by a certain ID, not by the names.

Anyway, wait until someone confirms about cross-region online play. I honestly don't see why online would be region-locked like Mario Tennis Open did.

When you go to the dream emporium, one of the options leads to a list that appears to be countries (or continents). I recognized "America" on the list, so that at least, will not be region locked.

I can see local wifi being region locked, but hopefully internet wifi won't be.

JoeDee your talking like us JA owners arnt getting the NA version and plan on keeping the JA version. All of us are getting the NA version and most of us are selling the JA version.
